A little aqua therapy
. . . helped ease the sadness brought on by the loss of our sweet dog, Kodi. Kodi crossed the rainbow bridge on Monday. She was a fantastic dog, who enriched our lives for twelve years. She will be dearly missed.
To take our mind off losing Kodi, we spent a good bit of time underwater this week, drowning our sorrows. First we dove Blue Heron Bridge, where the slug fest continues. Then we did a blackwater dive on Wednesday night. We finished the week with a beach dive at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, where I photographed my first Tesselated Blenny.
For those not familiar with Blackwater Diving it involves drifting in the gulf stream several miles offshore, at night, over water depths of 500 - 700 ft (150 - 210 m). You follow a lighted buoy, which helps to keep you oriented. The dive lasts 90-120 minutes. During that time you typically drift for 4 - 7 miles (6.5 - 11 km). The fauna presented here was photographed at depths of 20 - 60 ft (6 - 18 m). Most critters are much less than 1” (2.54 cm) in size.
On Wednesday we first had to sit out a thunderstorm. Then we drifted 5.5 miles over depths ranging from 680 ft to 635 ft. The critter at right is a type of Ctenophore (Jelly).
