If you can’t be good
. . . be lucky. When we laid out this year’s trip, we planned to explore the Asheville NC area after Delaware and Virginia. Several weeks ago, we decided to check out Myrtle Beach instead and changed all of our reservations. A very fortuitous decision.
From Delaware Seashore SP we headed south along the eastern shore. At the point where you cross into Virginia, there is a welcome center. It not only welcomes humans, but also dogs and cats. The woman who greeted us fell in love with Koko, who received not just one, but four treats and had her picture taken.
From there, it was a short hop to our next destination, Kiptopeke State Park in Cape Charles VA.
Kiptopeke SP had a lot going for it - great trails, beaches, boat launch, wildlife - but it also had gnats! The first night was cool enough that we opened the windows and they got in through the screens. We must have killed a hundred of them. Despite closing up and turning on the A/C, we are still battling some residual pests. I don’t think we will visit that park again any time soon.
The breakwater at Kiptopeke State Park, designed to protect the ferry dock, was made from concrete ships decommissioned after WWII. The ferry no longer runs, but the breakwater remains intact since the 1940’s.
To break up the drive from Virginia to Myrtle Beach, we made a stopover in North Carolina. The RV park provided a really nice seating area at each site with a lovely view of Route 95. The park itself was small with no activities, so we looked for something more interesting to do near Selma NC. We discovered the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park. A small, but amazing collection of giant sized whirligigs designed by this local artist. We had only a light breeze, so the motion was minimal, but this video provides some highlights: click here.
We arrived at Myrtle Beach on Sunday and will be here for most of the week, hopefully well out of the path of Milton. For more pics from this week beyond the ‘hood, click here.
