Bye-Bye Gnats . . .

Hello traffic! Last Sunday we landed at Myrtle Beach State Park in South Carolina, our final major stop for this year’s adventure. It is a lovely campground with good facilities right at the beach. What could be bad about that? (1) It is almost smack dab at the end of the runway for Myrtle Beach Airport and (2) Myrtle Beach has raised traffic to an art form. A typical 6 mile trip could take up to 25 minutes (and this was mid-week, off season). On a positive note, we did not see any of the copperhead snakes that numerous signs warned about.

Once you get used to the planes landing and taking off, Myrtle Beach State Park is actually quite nice. The sites are all heavily wooded (I heard Great Horned Owls hooting almost every morning). It is a short walk to the beach and dogs are allowed. They have nice nature trails with lots of informative signage and acres of wildflowers. I photographed at least eight species of butterflies and moths!

We had planned to spend the final week of our trip at St. Andrews SP near Panama City FL. But hurricanes Helene and Milton had other ideas. While St. Andrews is open, the campground we needed to use between Georgia and the panhandle is closed, so we cancelled our reservation, over-nighted in Georgia, and headed home. Home, by the way, was absolutely fine. We just had some serious twig picking-up to do in the back yard.
